Dr Emilie Combet AsprayPrincipal Investigator and Senior Lecturer in Nutrition, 2009 - Present My research is multi-disciplinary and focuses on how food (including whole foods, specific nutrients, and the way we eat) impacts on health throughout life, from the time peri-conception to old age. I have a particular interest on the “farm to fork to society” nexus, and its implications for all stakeholders, from a community, industry and clinical settings. It is a fascinating topic, since its implications are at the heart of the challenges faced by today’s modern society: ageing and chronic diseases. Human nutrition is a body of integrated science, underpinning much of biomedical and health research, with broad implications for public health and related policies and commercial activities. Our research in Human Nutrition at Glasgow always aims to inform, and change, practice and policy. Impactful research is at the core of our activity. Some projects are industry-led, others funded by charities and governmental bodies. Most are applied, with wide public health implications. Dr Areej Alkhaldy
Visiting Research Fellow, August 2019 - Present, Supported by the King Abdulaiz University. I completed my BSc in Nutrition from Umm Al-Qura University in Saudi Arabia (2003). I obtained my MSc in Dietetics from the Medical School at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio followed by a Dietetic Internship year in Michigan, USA (2009). I received my Ph.D. from the Human Nutrition Department from the Medical School at Glasgow University in Scotland (2014). My PhD work focused on the inter-individual variability of polyphenol metabolism and colonic health using human feeding and in-vitro fecal fermentation designs. During my PhD, I examined the effects of ethnicity, ageing, and the risk of colorectal cancer, as factors that could influence the metabolism of dietary polyphenols. My key research areas and interests include dietary polyphenols and fibre metabolism, gut microbiota and colonic health, food technology and development of new healthy food products, and nutrition care process of chronic diseases and dietetic practices. After completing my PhD degree, I obtained an assistant professor position in King Abdulaziz University (2015). In 2016, I was nominated to be the Head of the Department of Clinical Nutrition for the period from 2016-2018. I am experienced in academic accreditation and higher education quality, curriculum development, and strategic planning. While at King Abdulaziz University, I have taught several courses for the undergraduate students such as Nutrition during Lifecycle, Enteral and Parental Support, Management in Nutrition and Dietetics. My research work includes assessing the dietary habits of Saudi people who are at risk of colorectal cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, my research includes evaluating the general and post-bariatric nutritional knowledge among patients undergoing bariatric surgery as well as the effect of the nutritional education on the bariatric patients’ knowledge. I have also done some work on the status of nutrition care process implementation in Hospitals in Jeddah, the nutritional knowledge and malnutrition practice among physicians in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and simulation as a teaching method in the dietetic filed.
