With most in-person conferences sadly cancelled in 2020, science communication has moved online and each week there are scores of exciting nutrition webinars going on - often free, accessible to all, and perfect for a little extra-curricular learning!
This week, Emilie spoke at a webinar organised by the Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO), alongside Dr Kamal Mahawar and Dr Kevin Hall. Emilie presented the latest science surrounding the outcomes of dietary intervention in patients with Type 2 Diabetes, covering some exciting results from meta-analyses conducted by Glasgow Human Nutrition PhD student, Chaitong Churuangsuk. Each talk has been summarised into an infographic by another of Emilie's PhD students, Martha (below). For more information about ASO or to check out their upcoming webinars, head over to their website.

This year the annual student conference from the Nutrition Society, Nutrition Futures moved online. Designed for undergraduates and post-graduates, Nutrition Futures gives students the opportunity to develop career building skills, create job seeking strategies, and learn about nutritional science research.
The 2020 two day programme was filled with insightful talks from a wide range of experts. Dr Andrea Darling (University of Surrey) presented her top 10 tips for success in early career research on day 1, followed by a useful workshop on public speaking from Vince Stevenson (The College of Public Speaking London). The final workshop of the day was given by the Nutrition Society Honorary Strategic Communications Officer, Dr Carrie Ruxton, and focussed on science communication across a variety of channels. Day 2 kicked off with a lively original communications sessions, where two of our PhD students, Salma Abuznada and Martha Redway, presented their research on childhood weight stigma and iodine excess from seaweed, respectively. Dr Anne Mullen, chief editor of Nature Food, lead a workshop on scientific writing and publishing, revealing that 'the secret [to publishing] is, that there aren't any'. The conference wrapped up with a career panel featuring specialists in animal nutrition, freelancing, sports nutrition, and healthcare. With plenary lectures from Dr Andrea Darling, Professor Graeme Close (Liverpool John Moores University), Gillian Swan (Public Health England), and Dr Ruan Elliott (University of Surrey), there were also plenty of opportunities to learn about cutting edge science from experts in the field. Below are a couple of graphics created by Martha during the workshops, which summarise the speakers key messages, and if you're interested in learning more about the conference, you can check out the hashtag #NutritionFutures20 on Twitter.
We are looking for a new doctoral student to join our team, working on a joint project with partners Valorex and ForFarmers. This studentship will build on our previous work on iodine and dairy products, to start in October 2020.
This project will explore the links between animal nutrition, nutritional value of dairy products, sustainability and consumer perception, and will focus on opportunities to optimise the nutritional value of milk (in particular omega-3 fatty acids and iodine content), and strategies for production that optimise both metabolic health and environmental outcomes (lowered methane emission). The project has three specific objectives: 1) To determine how specific animal feeding strategies will impact on the nutrient composition of milk and derived products destined for human consumption, as well as selected environmental / animal health factors. 2) To explore consumer drivers and barriers in term of inclusion of the food group in their diets (animal health, “natural” food production and processing chains, environmental impact, potential for improved health) and consumer beliefs, attitudes and awareness of nutritional issues around milk and dairy products. 3) To design a protocol leading to an improved product for piloting, evaluating its acceptability and impact on selected markers of health.
